2. Mzimkhulwana Hut Hike – 8 km each way (total 16 km’s)

The hike starts from the Cobham Ezemvelo Camping Site and takes us along the well trodden path of the Giants Cup Trail. The beginning section is a bit of a climb but don’t get disheartened as this improves the views, thereafter the path soon levels off. When I say the path levels off I mean this relative to the Berg! There are still going to be some ups and downs! The route takes us past some interesting rock formations called Tortoise Rocks and offers nice views of the Mzimkhulwana River Valley. Just when you are starting to feel you are pushing really starting to push your boundaries the Mzimkhulwana Hut, on the bank of a tributary comes into view.

This is a very basic hikers’ hut with bunk beds (no mattresses) and flushing toilets – the facilities are very rustic so please don’t expect a hotel type chalet. That being said this is such a peaceful place to take in the open surroundings and look back over the hills that we hiked over earlier. You will be ok with the trade off in luxuries. Our return hike takes us back along the same trail.

Accommodation – 1 night in hikers hut.

Date: Pls enquire to book a date.
Strenuous
Return Time (to Cobham):  12:00 to 1:00 pm depending on pace of group.
Distance:  16 km’s total – 8 km’s each day.
Cost: R415 per person – min group size is 6 adults – groups of 4 adults can be catered for at a revised cost R530.
Children accompanied by parent: R330 each – Over 15 years only – max 2 children per parent.
Includes:
Accommodation, 1 x dinner, tea/coffee, guiding of route, all park entrance fees, equipment as stated.

3. Gxalingenwa Cave – Overnight – Circular Route
Very Strenuous

14 km each way (total 28 km’s)

The hike starts from the Cobham Ezemvelo Camping Site and takes us up alongside a river called Emerald Stream where we will stop for lunch at one of the pools on this pristine river. The water will be somewhat cold in April – so only the brave will take a dip. After this we leave the river and hike past an interesting rock formation called Pinnacle Rock before making our way down to the Gxalingenwa River which we follow upstream until we reach the cave, where we will set up camp. Save some energy for the last bit of uphill to get the actual cave!! This cave, carved out of the sandstone layers of the little Berg boasts a large flat sleeping area which is nicely sheltered and also a stunning waterfall and plunge pool. Our return hike offers some lovely views over the Gxalingenwa Gorge and takes us down to the river once again until we join a well trodden section of the Giants Cup Trail. Here we start the final section of the hike back to the Cobham Campsite. After completing this hike you will be able to say with pride that you have been hiking in The Berg.

Date: Pls enquire to book a date.
